Hill College Men’s Rodeo Team wins last rodeo of the fall season

The Hill College Rodeo Teams competed in Conroe at the Sam Houston State University Rodeo Nov. 9-10. 

In the saddle bronc riding, Parker Fleet, a freshman from Axtell, won the long round with a 76-point ride, and finished fourth in the average with a score of 142 on two head. Jarrod Hammons, a sophomore from Stephenville, finished third in the average with a 70 and 73-point rides. 

In the steer wrestling, freshman Layne York, from Huntsville, placed third with a 4.6-second time for a four-way split for first in the long go-round, was fourth in the short go with another 4.6-second time, ending up third in the average.

In the tie-down roping, sophomores King Pickett of Jackson, Miss., placed fourth in the long go with a 9.3 second time, and Cyle Denison of Iowa, La., placed tenth with a 10.9 second time. In the average, Pickett finished third and Denison placed seventh.

In the team roping, sophomores Denison and Ross Ashford, of Lott, won the rodeo with an average of 12.2 seconds on two head. Another sophomore, Colt Brittain, of Rockwall, won second place with a 5.9-second time and placed second in the long go-round, but missed in the short go.

Colby Fedor, a sophomore of Grandview, placed fourth in the bareback riding with a 73-point ride in the long go-round and 72-point ride in the short go-round, placing him fourth in the average.

Freshman Parker McCown from Montgomery split second and third in the bull riding with a score of 81 in the first go-round and had a 75-point ride in the short go-round and won the average.

On the women’s team, Maci Ray, a sophomore from Maybank, came back to the short round in the barrel racing on Saturday night with a 17.66 second time on her run.

The men’s team finished first overall with a total of 695 points. The men’s team is currently sitting third in the Southern Region standings to finish out the fall rodeo season. Fourteen of the Hill College men’s team are in the top 15 of their respective events; McCown is leading the bull riding standing and team ropers, Denison and Ashford, are leading the heading and heeling standings. The next college rodeo will be Feb. 9-10 at Trinity Valley Community College, in Athens, Texas.
